Why Do You Need Oil Changes?

A common question we receive concerns why vehicles require oil changes. Another question we get is, “How often?” To understand why your vehicle needs oil changes to perform at its best, you must first understand the importance of oil in keeping your engine components running.

Lubrication is essential in keeping your engine’s components running without creating too much heat that’s naturally caused by friction. Engines have many moving parts that rub against one another in quick succession. Without oil to lubricate these parts, too much heat would be generated from the friction, greatly reducing the lifespan of the parts and increasing the chance of a malfunction.

Motor oil is designed for engines and provides the right lubrication to prevent too much friction, which is why other liquids like water aren’t used in an engine. However, oil is designed to do more than lubricate and moderate temperatures. For example, oil attracts debris like tiny pieces of metal, dirt, and general build-up between oil changes, although your vehicle’s filter should do an ample job at keeping this debris away from the engine.

Oil eventually begins losing its properties the longer it’s used without replacing it. Old oil goes from a liquid substance into a thick slime, preventing it from properly lubricating the parts and collecting unwanted debris because it has lost its proper consistency. Because of this, oil changes don’t consist of adding onto existing oil but removing the current oil to replace it with a fresh supply to keep the engine properly lubricated and debris-free.

Are there any other reasons why your vehicle requires oil changes? There are several. Without fresh oil, your engine likely won’t output the fuel efficiency numbers you should expect from your car. You’ll notice that you’re burning fuel faster the longer you go without an oil change, meaning you’ll spend more money on gas and may need to make more frequent trips to the gas pump. This is without mentioning the massive costs you’ll face if your engine breaks because it hasn’t received an oil change in a long time. These problems can be easily prevented by diligence and by bringing your vehicle in for an oil change when needed.

How often do you need an oil change? You should change your vehicle’s oil every six to twelve months after your last oil change or after 5,000 to 7,500 miles—whichever comes first. An oil change every six months to a year gives you the best window to replace your existing oil before it becomes a detriment to your engine. You may need an oil change every seven or eight months, depending on how many miles you drive each month. However, not everyone drives 5,000 miles in a year, so remember to change your oil at least every 12 months if you don’t put many miles on your car.

Other Services We Offer

Our services go beyond oil changes. Oil changes are one of your responsibilities every year as a vehicle owner, but they’re not the only ones. Owning a vehicle means that you’re committing to your annual services, and our dealership is proud to be a one-stop shop for all of your needs.

You should have your tires rotated and balanced at least once a year to ensure even wear and tear. Our team will provide the necessary tire services for your vehicle, including replacements and installations or patching one of your current tires to prevent an air leak. Your tires may not need replacing, and we’ll determine this by measuring the treads of each tire to check if you’re still within the legal guidelines.

Alongside tire servicing, you should also have your wheels aligned. We have the tools and know-how to help you with wheel servicing or replacing. Your vehicle’s brake pads and rotors require servicing to keep them effectively stopping your vehicle. This may include replacing the pads and rotors with new ones, and our team is more than equipped for the task—you can buy the replacement parts within our parts center.

What if you need a new battery, headlamp, turn signal bulb, or even new windshield wipers? We’ll help you with the replacement of these parts and more. You’re welcome to bring your vehicle in for servicing, even if it’s to have your brake line, transmission, or power-steering fluids flushed and replenished. Our list of services is extensive, so be sure to ask about a specific one when you schedule your appointment.
